What is nature? Every person has their own definition of nature; of course there is the formal definition of nature, which is the natural world as it exists without human beings or civilization. But to me, nature is where I go to find peace and serenity. Nature is the one place I can go release myself from the commotion and the fast pace of the civilized world; the place I go to where I can clear my head and be free from all my problems, if only for a moment; where I can really slow things down and be able to think about life with a clear conscience.
Nature has a way of clearing my senses, and I think that is what really makes me feel at peace. Sight: seeing all the flowers, plants, and trees blend with the sky and the clouds. Sound: hearing the calmness of birds chirping and bees buzzing puts me at ease, instead of the loudness of construction tools and cars driving. Scent: rather than inhaling all the exhaust fumes of vehicles and smelling gas and food at every street corner, I smell all the flowers blending together to produce a heavenly scent. Touch: picking up dandelions or feeling the bark on the trees by trying to climb them-- just have to be sure to watch out for poison ivy and thorns. Taste: I have never tried tasting anything in nature because it is mostly worms and wild animals. Although cooking hot dogs or making s’mores over an open fire make for one delicious treat.
Although I have not had many experiences in nature, the experiences that I have had were very successful in making me feel at peace with myself. Nature is more than just trees or a waterfall in the middle of the woods; it is a place to go where I feel completely at home and relaxed and can feel all of my troubles slipping away almost immediately. We as humans learned to survive in nature and changed it into the cities that it is now. I think that for me, going to sit in nature is a way of going back to simpler times and it helps to forget the worries that are a part of everyday life. Whether it be walking alone on a path or spending an evening outside a campfire with my friends, nature will always be the place I go to free myself from the troubles of the civilized world.
